10. “Thou shalt not covet” (Ex. 20:17a). For obvious reasons the Mosaic law states no penalty for covetousness in thought only. However, if covetousness found expression in stealing, adultery, or other sins, the Mosaic penalty for the particular sin was applied. Thus death could be the indirect penalty for some manifestations of covetousness. The moral principle of the tenth commandment reappears in the New Testament in a setting of grace: “But fornication, and all uncleanness, or covetousness, let
